When the Phone Rang

This story was conceived through a constraint. It arose one day suddenly and without warning, in a poetry workshop with the late Lewis Warsh. The book is a meditation on memory – remembering and forgetting. Or, it’s a tribute to those memories that sustain like stubborn specters, haunting the present. It’s looping and recurring opening paragraph reveals a larger story of dislocation:

It happened in a place that exists, only in books, films and memories of those born before 1995. When the phone rang it was 1992, 10:36am, a Tuesday, and in this moment the country of Y was still a country
.

The story was adapted to a screenplay, and became a film by the same name.
